Penn State Nittany Lions hit with $60 million fine, 4-year bowl ban, wins dating to 1998 vacated

More details emerging. Summary so far:

• $60 million fine
• Vacation of wins from 1998-2011 (112 wins)
• Four-year postseason ban
• Players may transfer and play immediately at other schools
• Athletic department on probation for five years

The sanctions include a reduction in the number of football scholarships that can be awarded. Combined with the vacating of wins and postseason ban, these three sanctions harm past, present, and future players who had NOTHING to do with the actions of a handful of administrators. Limiting scholarships will deny some future players access to a top-notch university and a football program with the best graduation rate in the country. How does this punish Sandusky? How does this punish Spanier or Paterno? I expect others involved to be removed from the program as well. How do these sanctions punish them?

To be clear, I do not condone what Sandusky did or the cover-up that took place. I support the fines that will be paid to help prevent child abuse and aid victims. What I want understood is that the supposed “culture of secrecy” does not extend to the over 8,000 academic and athletic faculty members. It does not permeate the over 95,000 students enrolled. They, along with the nearly 500,000 alumni believed in the motto “Success with Honor”. Do the actions of a few totally negate the culture of pride, honor, and hard work that Penn State represents to so many people?
