As others have said, all the required planning and grading that goes with teaching is done before or after school hours. I have 3 family members who are teachers in K-12. A 40 hour work week is...

Tomorrow, Wednesday August 1, will be Teacher...
teamteachers: Truths will operate as usual dare day.   Here are the rules. Dares: You may put requests in people’s asks.  For example, I dare Pablo to build a fort with his wife in their new house.  You have the right to not do a dare without any peer pressure.  For example, I will not post a picture of how messy my room is right now. Get on it. Should be a good time!!

tomesawayfromhome: Now that the gelato has arrived, I don’t have to stick close to home. Since my BIL’s girlfriend is going to start her first teaching job in two weeks, and she has no idea what will be in her classroom, supply-wise, I thought that I’d put together a bag of useful things that she might not… I teach 9th grade science as well. Turn in apartment keys (YAY!!!) Buy nail aprons from Home Depot for group supplies. (I’ll post details later if the idea works) Buy sheet protectors for planning binder. Buy labels and ribbon. Print master copy of first day materials and organize for copying. Start planning for Earth Science II. (I’ve never taught this and I haven’t done any planning for it yet. Starting to...

Philadelphia is fun.
notajournalist: That’s all. That’s my profound statement for the day.  Vietnamese food for supper (Hello, Pho, you are delicious!), good company, silly talks, impressions, and a city full of things I’ve never seen. If you get a chance, decide if Pat’s or Geno’s has the better Philly cheesesteak!

NY & Co Fail
I browsed their 50% off everything sale after seeing it mentioned on #education. Unless I’m looking for something specific, I like to sleep on it before decided if and what to buy. When I went back today, not only had the sale changed to 40%, but 3 of my 5 choices were not included! The budget just doesn’t allow for full price.

: Why I Love the #Education Community →
grayer: It’s my ~unbiased~ belief that the #education community is the greatest education community on the interwebs. Here’s why: Best practices and academic findings are center stage. The education community tries to find relevant articles for a variety of situations. When you go to other teaching… This.

Hey Teachers! New York and Company has everything...
ohmuffins: teachingtoday: Not sure if it’s online AND in stores but there is an online promo code (it’s listed on the website). Figured some of us are back-to-school shopping and need to stock up on cardigans. First the LOFT and now NY&Co.  You guys are killing me.  I just de-cluttered my wardrobe AND set a budget. A budget that does not include much money for new clothes.

It's been an emotionally stressful few days
My husband found his dream job posted. It’s a technology position in my district. It requires a teaching certificate, even though the position is not for a classroom teacher. He doesn’t have one, and we don’t have the time or money to change that. The position would have been a great fit for him, and it would have put him on the same work schedule as me, which would have been...

DC/MD #Education Meet
pencilblots: Alright, since Hithertokat cannot make it Sunday, I wanted to know who was actually coming to the meet. I am only asking because it is a 40 minute drive out to Silver Spring, and I didn’t want to make that trip to have nobody else there. Or if we are all in Baltimore, or somewhere else, we could reorganize. What do you guys think? My plans have changed as well, but I could still...

Still No Internet
The company put in the underground cable, and the house is already wired, but apparently a different contractor needs to terminate the cable. My husband can do that. But no. We have to wait for them.  So that means I’ll stop at Panera on Saturday to check on plans for the DC meetup Sunday!

Got to Teach Today!
Spent the day at the pool with five kids all under 10. That was a first. Also a first was teaching my 7 year old niece how to dive. She does swim team and needed to improve her starts. It’s great because I can’t technically swim. Not as in I’ll drown, rather I can’t do the different strokes. Not even freestyle.

Teacher Dare Day Question:
What’s the easiest/best method you have found for communicating with parents? For example, most of my 160 students have two parents, both with email addresses. It would take me forever to create an email group on Outlook, so I need some other method of organizing those emails for mass mailing of class updates, and mailing individuals for progress reports. How do you handle it?

The Moving is (Almost) Complete!
Everything from the apartment has been moved out. It’s as clean as it’s going to get, now we need to wait for the end of the month to turn in our keys. Things at the new place are surprisingly organized, though we still have plenty to do. And a few furniture items that might not fit. Fingers crossed that the cable company gets us Internet this week!!

MD/DC/VA(/PA?) #Education meet-up?

Literature Review: Done
I wrote a formal literature review for my research methods grad course. It covered inquiry-based learning in relation to standardized test scores, and ended with the question of how to best measure inquiry skills (since standardized tests just don’t cut it). Research writing is not a style I enjoy, and I don’t feel very skilled at it, BUT… The only points deducted were for...

When I was growing up we frequently lost power. If you heard thunder, you knew you had to get the flashlights out. If the forecast called for snow, we got out the extra blankets and stacked extra wood near the door. I’ve experienced multiple day power outages during difficult weather conditions. I know how much it sucks. But when did the attitude change from individual preparedness to...

Thank You to the Electric Companies!
The storm that blew through on Friday night was intense. I watched the trees behind my apartment bend past 45 degrees, and watched a couple eventually snap in the wind. I love extreme weather, but this was scary. I must live in a power grid sweet spot because despite the intense wind damage, we lost power for only a second at the apartment. Not even long enough for the oven clock to reset. The...
